5 Must-Have Kitchen Appliances to Save Time and Simplify Cooking

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Saturdays! I just finished a batch cooking day. I made some West African greens, just like my grandma used to cook them. Growing up, Saturdays meant fufu soup—just like Sundays mean roast dinners for some or Tuesdays mean tacos for others.

Grandma would start prepping on Friday. After school, we’d peel and chop a big batch of onions, sometimes pureeing them by hand if the electricity was out. Greens were cut, sauce half-prepped, and meat boiled—ready to go by early Saturday morning. Grandma, an early bird, made sure everything was cooked by 9 a.m., dished out by 9:30, and packed in baskets to share with an aunt, grandaunt, or neighbor.

Food was a community affair. Grandma’s cooking was legendary, and receiving a Saturday soup basket—Crain Crain, bitter leaf soup, or sorrel egusi—was a treat.

My Top Picks for Beginners

If you’re just starting out, you don’t need all of these at once! My top two picks? A food processor and an air fryer—hands down. They can handle most chopping, blending, and cooking tasks while saving you loads of time. They won’t cook soups, but they’ll make prep work a breeze.
