Practical Ways to Keep Going—Even When Motivation Fades

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I don’t know if you’ve ever had the pleasure of trying to convince a picky eater to try something new, but let me tell you, it can feel like an Olympic event. My daughter, at one time was the reigning champion of food skepticism. I think she had a firm policy: If it looked unfamiliar, it was automatically suspicious.

I used to beg, bribe, and practically give Oscar-worthy performances trying to get her to take a bite of something beyond her usual favorites. Nothing worked!

I use to be let’s use the word- “displeased with my husband” when it seemed like he ALWAYS got her to eat something that I have worked for to no avail. Until one day, he pointed out something so simple, yet so powerful: “She has to see you eat it and love it. You have to sell it to her.”

How Your Confidence Inspires Others

That was my lightbulb moment. Instead of pleading with her to believe in the food, I needed to genuinely enjoy it myself. So, I started savoring my meals with enthusiasm, describing the flavors, delighting in every bite. And wouldn’t you know it? Little by little, she got curious. She saw my belief in what I was eating, and eventually, she things a chance.

Whether it’s your work, your parenting, your calling, or your creative pursuits, people take cues from you. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, why should they? If you show up with doubt and hesitation, people sense it. But if you carry yourself with confidence, if you genuinely enjoy and commit to the process, others will eventually take notice.

The Power of Small, Consistent Steps

One of the biggest lies we believe is that we have to take giant leaps to make progress. But most breakthroughs don’t happen in leaps—they happen in small, faithful steps taken over time.

  • Set Micro Goals – Instead of focusing on the big picture that feels overwhelming, break it down. What’s one small step you can take today? Maybe it’s writing one page, making one phone call, or spending just 10 minutes in focused effort. Small steps add up.
  • Write down your original motivation—the reason you started in the first place. When discouragement comes, revisit it. Let it remind you of the bigger purpose behind what you’re doing.**

Lean on Strength Beyond Your Own

If we rely solely on our own strength, we’ll burn out. But when we tap into the ultimate source—God’s strength—we find endurance we didn’t even know we had.

  • Pray for Renewal – Sometimes, the best thing you can do is pause and pray. Ask God to renew your passion and give you the grace to keep going.
  • Remember Hebrews 12:2 – “For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross.” Jesus didn’t push through because it was easy. He kept going because He saw the joy ahead. Keep your eyes on the greater purpose, not just the current struggle.

Surround Yourself with the Right Voices

Who you listen to matters. If you’re constantly around negativity, doubt, and fear, it’s going to be hard to stay the course. But if you intentionally surround yourself with voices of faith, encouragement, and wisdom, you’ll find strength to keep going.

  • Find Your People – Join a community of like-minded individuals who will uplift you. Whether it’s a faith group, a mastermind, or simply a few good friends who believe in your vision, make sure you’re connected.
  • Feed Your Mind with Truth – Read books, listen to podcasts, and follow people who have walked this journey and come out stronger. Let their testimonies remind you that persistence leads to breakthrough.

Give Yourself Permission to Rest—Not Quit

Sometimes, what you need isn’t to push harder but to step back and recharge. Rest is not the same as quitting.

  • Schedule Time to Recharge – Whether it’s a Sabbath, a weekend off, or just an afternoon to breathe, give yourself space to rest so you can come back stronger.
  • Celebrate Small Wins – Don’t wait for the ‘big moment’ to celebrate. Acknowledge every step forward. Gratitude fuels endurance.

Keep Going—Your Breakthrough is Coming

You don’t have to feel motivated every day. You just have to keep showing up. Keep believing. Keep trusting that the seeds you’re planting will bear fruit in due time.

Because one day, you’ll look back and realize that the only difference between where you are now and where you want to be—was that you didn’t quit.

And that? That’s where the real victory lies.
